Who Are We?
The Kiwanis Club of Young Professionals in Kingston, Jamaica was officially formed in June 2015, with 23 charter members. It has since grown .
Our club is designed to cater to young professionals with busy lifestyles who have a passion for community service. As a result, the club offers more flexible meeting schedules and impactful hands-on service projects.
Since its establishment, the club has undertaken numerous outreach projects aimed at serving children. We pride ourselves on our creative and innovative approach to project planning and implementation.
Our Objective
The six objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Kiwanis International Convention in Denver, Colorado. Throughout the decades, they have remained unchanged. These objects serve as the guiding principles of the Kiwanis family.
Object 1: To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
Object 2: To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
Object 3: To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.
Object 4: To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.
Object 5: To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.
Object 6: To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will.
THE BRING UP GRADES (BUG) PROGRAMME
Our signature project is the weekly Bring Up Grades (BUG) program at Norman Gardens Primary and Junior High School. This program serves children from the nearby inner-city communities of Norman Gardens and Mountain View, engaging them in activities to improve their literacy skills, as well as their social and behavioral development.
The BUG program is designed to provide a weekly source of motivation and support for the enrolled children. Through this initiative, the Club has had a positive impact.
In 2015, 87% of students who attended the weekly BUG sessions achieved Mastery on the Grade Four Literacy Test, with 20 students reaching Mastery. Additionally, five students achieved Mastery in 2016.
